Panel Discussion on Photographic Materiality and the Politics of Representation.
"How is the materiality of the photograph entangled with its meaning? This paper discusses the photographic art practice of Wei Leng Tay, who probes the photographic image-obect as a material "world", rediscovering its presence through surface reflections, its depth and density in shaved prints, and blowing up the microscopic biomes that may enwrap its form. Contextualizing the work alongside practices by Takamatsu Jiro in 1970s Japan, Kao Chung-Li in 1990s Taiwant and contemporary Hong Kong-born Australian artist Cyrus Tang -- I ask how such creative interventions may help to reframe photographic 'subject/matter' (matiere) in the physical and digital archive"
