Jonathan Nichols's PhD research, titled "Walking with Ghosts - The Utility of Independence in Painting," connects the mimetic character of painting to the practice of independent painters. I show that mimetic processes (and their ghosts) are implicit in what term painterly independence The research demonstrates that a painter's memory and experience of painting are crucial factors in the formation and activation of the collective shape of painting, where it functions as an institution in itself. The idea of a painter working "independently" is, I argue, built into the very fabric or painting and how it works.
