Migration is part of the human condition, and we evolve through various transitions in our lives. As a Chinese literati figure in this painting, Lilou is embarking on a journey towards a misty unknown. He looks back mid-step as something is beckoning, but he seems only to move further and further away from that. The candle, a motif that also appears in other works, is a dim source of light that guides one in the darkness and a melancholic reminder of time-passing and flickering impermanence. Using automotive airbrushing and Chinese calligraphic ink wash techniques to create a painterly style that is reminiscent of both Pop Art and neo-Nanyang style,Wong preserves tradition through reinvention.
