In a world defined by categories and boundaries—tools for navigating existence—we often forget their man-made nature. While essential for understanding, these frameworks can become confining truths when we cling to a singular narrative. Lai Dieu Ha disrupts these barriers through her multidisciplinary practice, inviting us to embrace a plurality of perspectives. Born into an artistic family in the late 1970s, during a time when labour and mass production shaped Vietnam’s narrative, her journey explores identity and societal constructs. Early defiance blossomed into creativity as she drew satirical images of Soviet leaders, aware of art’s transformative power. A pivotal moment arrived with her encounter of Orlan’s provocative performances, igniting her passion for challenging boundaries.

Ha’s work navigates performance, psychology, and sociopolitical commentary, positioning her as a significant feminist voice in Vietnamese contemporary art. In her sculptural series inspired by Hydra, she embraces a narrative of fluid identity and interconnectedness. She reflects, “Since 2012, I sought a quieter method of inquiry. This led me to ‘Sewing with Fabric,’ drawing inspiration from the shape, structure, and ecosystem of freshwater organisms like Hydra. I see this as a long-term performance that evolves with history, time, and place.”

In sewing and listening to the news, Ha intertwines daily life with creation. The Hydra transforms into a symbol of resilience, softening violence and soothing the pain of war, offering solace amid chaos. Through her textile wearable sculptures, she invites us to reflect on our interconnectedness and the stories we weave in this ever-changing world. The Hydra series, featuring wearable sculptural skirts, bags, and headwear, will be brought to life through performances by local Singaporean artists, Josh Tirados, Elden Zachery, Liz Zhu and Muhammad Mustaghfir. These activations will be accompanied by sound art from Nguyen Van Cuong and will take place at Millenia Walk on November 14, 16 (with the artist present), 30, and December 14.
