Tucked away in a shophouse on Kim Yam Road, Archiving Landscape’ unveils untold narratives around the natural environments in Southeast Asia. Featuring works by Priyageetha Dia and Maryanto, the exhibition leans on nature as a central motif to reflect on post-colonialism, corporatism and environmental degradation. Dia uses rubber plantations in Southeast Asia as a point of departure to consider how our digital epoch is but a continuation of exploitation and colonial injustices in disguised forms; while Maryanto’s monochromatic works remind us of the fast disappearing scenery and beauty in Indonesia engulfed by rapid industrialisation and unthinking ravaging of the land. A series of his earlier works also draw reference to South Korea’s DMZ (demilitarized zone), evoking the social and political tensions that remain deeply embedded in these terrains. The artists address different forms of violence against our collective environment, history and memory, revealing the geopolitical nuances that persist in the structures of our contemporary society and the danger of non-action or non-resistance. Where one becomes a wayfarer discovering these ‘disputed lands’, Archiving Landscape seeks to spark a sense of journeying through the past to make sense of our present reality, as we consider and conceive the possibilities of an ever-precarious future.
